Doctoral Education
PhD programmes are cornerstones of research and higher education. They create new findings and expand scientific knowledge, generate benefits for the economy and society through innovation, and play an essential role in the further development of academic higher education.
On the path towards achieving their doctor’s degree, young researchers acquire the skills and competencies it takes to conduct original research meeting high scientific standards. By intensively focusing on a certain topic, the PhD students not only gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and problems in their specific field but also train their critical thinking and analytical abilities and acquire new problem-solving skills. All this is vital when it comes to training a new generation of researchers who further advance science, economy, and society in a positive direction.
Moreover, PhD students assume an important role in higher education because they integrate scientific research into teaching and supervise the next generation of scientists. This means that the PhD education is an essential driving force in knowledge creation, dissemination, and application. In other words, it is indispensable for overcoming complex global challenges and promoting societal progress.
Members of the St. Pölten UAS have various possibilities to pursue a doctoral education and receive comprehensive support from the University of Applied Sciences in doing so. These offers of support include special further training offers, PhD cooperations at the institutional level, cooperative doctoral programmes, and qualification agreements.
Joint Doctoral Programme „Visual Heritage“ between UAS St. Pölten and TU Wien
The joint doctoral program explores approaches to automatic image analysis and visualization to access historical media collections and make them accessible to a wide range of users. The central aspect here is the interdisciplinary approach between computer science and the humanities.
Partnership between St. Pölten UAS and University for Continuing Education Krems
The University for Continuing Education in Krems (UWK) and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences (UAS) have chosen to intensify their long-standing collaboration in the fields of Social and Computer Sciences. By connecting the research and teaching of both institutions more closely, it will be possible to better exploit synergies and promote joint projects.
Joint Supervision of Doctorates and Research Cooperations
To further reinforce the cooperation, staff members and students of the St. Pölten UAS are given the chance to be admitted to the PhD programme “Technology, Innovation, and Cohesive Societies” at the UWK after having completed a thematically related master degree programme. The two institutions are planning to jointly apply for research funding in order to secure third-party funds for their PhD cooperation. The close ties between the UWK and the UAS are to be reflected in their joint publication of research results as well. Likewise, the (lab) infrastructure is open to researchers from both partner institutions.
Closer Collaboration between Supervisors
The St. Pölten UAS and the UWK not only pave the way for this new PhD partnership – they also strike a new path when it comes to the integration of teachers and supervisors. Habilitated persons working at the St. Pölten UAS can be admitted to the PhD faculty of the UWK as associated members provided that they have the necessary specialist knowledge.
