Queer-inclusive Social Work. Conceptualization and competency enhancement for professionals in various fields of Social Work activity

Heteronormativity and a binary approach to gender continue to be predominant even in Social Work. As a consequence, the particularly vulnerable and highly heterogeneous group of queer persons with their special needs often remain unseen. The project “Queer-Inclusive Social Work” therefore has its focus on LGBTIAQ+ as a cross-sectional issue in various fields of Social Work activity. The students examine diverse Social Work offers to determine the existing understanding of how to deal with queer topics and, based on the needs situation, develop approaches to queer-inclusive Social Work in different areas together with social workers, institutions, and clients.

Using qualitative research methods (expert interviews, biography work, social space analysis for participatory needs assessment), the team members investigate needs, necessities, and obstacles, and the analysis results are used to develop recommendations, concepts, guidelines, workshops, and similar offers in order to enhance and anchor the competencies of Social Workers in a queer-inclusive context.
