Solidarity Economy Initiatives – “Islands of Transformation?” – Starting Points for Social Work in a Social and Ecological Transformation Process

Solidarity-based economies such as repair cafés, exchange platforms, care projects, local currencies, etc. are available in many regions and make an important contribution to both socio-ecological transformation and the securing of livelihood. Nevertheless, their principles and influences are still insufficiently researched.

This research project examines the role and principles of solidarity-based economy as well as its potential in the socio-ecological transformation in times of upheaval and crisis.

At the same time, the project addresses questions pertaining to the consequences for socially disadvantaged groups of the population, their protection against the impact of climate crises, and their possibilities of inclusive participation in solidarity-based economies and initiatives.

In order to answer these questions, the project uses qualitative research methods such as participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with project team members and experts from politics and administration, and surveys with questionnaires.

The research project aims to deepen the understanding of solidarity-based economies and to address the following questions among others:Can solidarity-based economic initiatives and projects constitute an alternative to traditional economic systems?Which principles and guidelines do they follow?Which framework conditions are necessary for their development? In how far do they present a new field for Social Work and for socially equitable solutions? Can they contribute to the socio-ecological transformation? And if yes, how?

The proposed research helps to explore the projects’ potential contribution to alternative solutions in times of societal and ecological crises. Moreover, it offers an opportunity for content-related exchange with the Hochschule für Gesellschaftsgestaltung in Koblenz.
