As head of the Media Computing research group at the Institute for Creative Media/Technologies, Matthias Zeppelzauer investigates the application of artificial intelligence.

In a current project in collaboration with Angela Stoeger-Horwath from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, he applies AI techniques such as deep learning to understand elephant communication:

  • What sounds do they make and when?
  • How do they convey important information to their peers?
  • How is their social status reflected in their calls?

AI helps analyze large databases of sound recordings and recognize patterns.

Using AI for the Common Good

Matthias Zeppelzauer is a professor of computer vision and machine learning, with a focus on approaches that center around humans. He completed a doctoral program in multimedia retrieval at TU Vienna and is habilitated in computer science.

"I conduct research in the field of artificial intelligence across disciplinary boundaries to make a sustainable contribution to the common good," he says.

Center for Artificial Intelligence

At UAS St. Pölten, he is also co-director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence. The center's goal is to advance AI research and generate tangible benefits for individuals, companies, society, and the environment through new and innovative solutions.
