KüKeN

An app that motivates people to take more care when disposing of waste.

Background and Problem

In many households, improper waste disposal results from a lack of knowledge or motivation among residents. Complex waste separation systems and frequently changing regulations add to the challenge. This often exacerbates the situation and further reduces motivation to separate waste correctly. Solutions to address this issue are therefore urgently needed.

Approach, Aims, and Procedure

As part of the KüKen project in the LEADER region Carnuntum in Bruck an der Leitha, we are developing a new solution to help reduce the number of incorrect disposals in waste separation.

In a pilot project, 150 households will test a new system for collecting and thermally utilizing kitchen waste. A key pillar of the project is an app that provides users with information on waste separation and encourages more careful waste disposal.

Test runs with the target group will determine how the app should be designed to ensure high usability. These tests will also help identify challenges related to waste separation and app usage. Based on the insights gained, we will define benchmarks that make it possible to forecast the motivation potential of the app.

Several innovative technologies and approaches form the core of the app, including:

  • Gamification und digitales Storytelling
  • Avatare und Personalisierung
  • Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) und das Internet der Dinge (IoT)

The overall goal is to develop a "talking" waste bin that provides users with essential information and motivates them to separate waste more carefully. By incorporating gamification elements, the app functions like a game, making knowledge transfer engaging and ensuring key messages are easy to grasp.
