McCube is a Young company, specialized on selling modular wooden houses. The primary focus of McCube is to be adaptable to the individual living situations of each customer. During the planning stage, the momentary and future expectations of the customers are taken into account. Therefore, the goal of McCube is to involve their customers into the planning process as early as possible. This process should be simplified in this project utilizing state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) technology (HTC Vive + Leap Motion).
Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), the national funding agency for industrial research and development in Austria, enabled McCube to partner up with us. The aim of this case study is to answer the following research questions:
- Do the customers of McCube accept VR as a planning method?
- Which VR technologies are suitable for this type of application? (Using the HTC Vive headset and the Leap Motion tracking device)
- Does the usage of VR technology during the planning phase add value to McCube or its customers?
Those questions will be answered through the development and several user testings of a software prototype which enables customers to customize their own McCube and interact with the objects inside.
Examples for interaction possibilities in a virtual McCube would be interacting with virtual objects, changing the optical surface style of walls and floors via one click and enabling smart home features.
This project should support the presentation of McCube in VR and should consequently simplify sales talks with potential customers.
