Virtual Motion, Real Research

What happens when classic animation techniques like stop-motion meet motion capture and virtual reality?

The VRinMotion project at St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences explores exactly that – in collaboration with international artists. It has produced four experimental installations that blend analogue aesthetics with digital immersion in entirely new ways.

Franziska Proksa led the project. She is the interim head of the ICMT – Institute for Creative\Media/Technologies and a PhD-qualified media scholar with an artistic background. For many years, she has been researching animation, visual media, and artistic production processes in digital spaces.

"The works created within VRinMotion show how artistic research can help us rethink virtual spaces not only technologically but also aesthetically and sensually."

Matthias Husinsky, technical lead of the project, is a creative technologist and researcher. As a university professor in the Department of Media and Digital Technologies, he combines immersive media technologies, interaction, and the human element in innovative, artistic ways.

"VRinMotion demonstrates how real-world content can be made available in the immersive films of the future – as an alternative to purely AI-generated worlds."

In the FH podcast Campus Talk, host Anna Michalski speaks with both about immersive experiences and dissolving the boundaries between stage, screen, and audience.
